Summer Programs - Teens

Grades 8 - 10

Counselor Apprentice
The Counselor Apprentice program develops creativity, self-confidence, and leadership skills. Counselor Apprentices (CAs) spend the first few days of the session learning strategies and skills for becoming a valuable assistant and working positively with younger campers. After observing various activities and age groups, CAs choose an activity in which they wish to assist. This program gives teens work experience and teaches them to take initiative and manage responsibilities.

Along with training, CAs also enjoy fun activities with new friends. In the morning, CAs help our teachers implement lesson plans for campers. After lunch, CAs gather for an off-campus group activity, such as mini-golf, museum visits, and bowling. CAs are also involved in an ongoing community service project.
To ensure the best experience for our younger campers and for the CAs, acceptance to the program is contingent on an interview. Interviews are approximately 15-20 minutes long and will be held on Saturday, February 9, 2008 and Saturday, March 1, 2008. Please call 703 749-6317 to schedule an interview. All applicants (even returning CAs) must go through the interview process. Repeat enrollment is not guaranteed.

Please Note: An application must be on file before an interview is scheduled. An interview for the Counselor Apprentice program does not guarantee acceptance. Letters of acceptance to the Counselor Apprentice program will be mailed out during the week of March 10th.

Culinary Arts
Potomac’s own Chef John Tiller of Sage Dining Services has developed our first Culinary Arts program for teens. Chef Tiller has over 20 years of experience in the food service industry ranging from fast food to fine dining and is excited to share his skills with this summer’s cooks-in-training.

In Culinary Arts, students learn about a wide variety of foods, basic nutrition, kitchen safety and sanitation, food preparation, and cutting techniques. Then the fun really begins as students learn to saute, pan fry, simmer, steam, boil, roast, braise and poach their own culinary creations. There will also be some baking and cake decorating projects to round out the meals. Once the basic techniques are learned, groups of students may engage in some friendly competition as seen on many popular cooking shows.
