Summer Programs - Outdoor Camps

Grades 1 - 7

Outdoor Camps provide fascinating summer experiences in diverse natural surroundings. The Nature Science program was created for campers who wish to learn about and investigate the natural world. Out For Fun is for children who want to get off the couch and experience the exciting world of outdoor activities. In 2008, we are also introducing Fly Fishing for the nature enthusiast looking to learn or perfect this unique skill..

Fly Fishing
Come learn the art and science of fly fishing. In preparation for fly fishing trips, campers learn about bugs and the basics of knot tying, casting, fly tying, and reading water currents. Campers take advantage of The Potomac School’s own ponds and streams to learn the basics of fly fishing before venturing out to local fishing holes to catch the “big one.”

Nature Science
Get your boots on and let’s investigate! Nature Science is for children who enjoy exploring the natural world. During this program, teachers introduce campers to the diversity of habitats in the Washington area. Campers learn to listen, observe, and study frogs, birds, fish, rocks, and trees.

Activities include creating aquariums, searching for fossils, testing water, painting murals of observed habitats, and using microscopes. Findings are recorded in a nature journal. Much of the day is spent outside investigating the natural world, but campers also spend time in the classroom. There are also daily swimming lessons at our pool.

In addition to exploring the natural surroundings on our 90-acre campus, campers go on field trips to wildlife refuges and habitats. Level A campers have one extended field trip followed by a barbecue. Level B campers enjoy two off-campus overnights where they sleep in tents, prepare food, and tell campfire stories.

Out For Fun
Out For Fun is designed to provide children with outdoor adventures. Campers are faced with daily challenges while having fun and learning new skills. Before each activity, instructors teach proper procedure and safety. As campers gain confidence in each activity, instructors demonstrate new techniques. Out for Fun activities include canoeing, rock climbing, and hiking.

Overnight camping trips are a highlight of this three-week program. Campers work together with their instructors to set up and take down campsites as well as help prepare meals. Hikes, campfire songs, and storytelling enhance the experience.

Campers are grouped by age and grade with activities appropriate to each age level. Level A participants have an overnight camp out once a week. Level B campers also have a weekly overnight camping trip, plus an additional two-night trip during the final week of the session. This longer trip is designed to provide more challenging activities.
