Admission Process
Entrance Procedures: Kindergarten
Please follow these steps to apply to Kindergarten at The Potomac School:
- Please note: Kindergarten applicants must be five-years-old by September 1 of their Kindergarten year. Application packages and tour scheduling for the next school year will be available starting mid-September.
- Call the Admission Office at 703-749-6313 for a view book and to schedule an hour-long visit and tour of the Lower School with an admission officer. Tours are offered between mid-September and mid-February, but we recommend that you call us by December 15. Families and applicants from overseas or outside the area are not required to come to the campus. Click here for more information.
- Schedule testing by an off-campus examiner. Children 5-years-old and under should take the WPPSI (Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence). Children 6-years-old or older should take the WISC-IV (Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children). Appointments are more easily obtained in the fall than the winter, so please call the testing center as soon as possible.
- Submit the completed admission application and $60 fee (payable to The Potomac School) by January 15. Late applications are processed if space allows.
- Submit the transcript request and teacher recommendation to your child’s current school. We will accept progress reports if the school does not offer transcripts.
- The Admission Office will schedule a group visit for Kindergarten applicants on a Wednesday afternoon in January, February, or March. You will be notified of the date and time of your child’s visit after your application is received and processed.
Test results, the current teacher recommendation, and the current official school transcript or progress report are due in the Admission Office by February 1. While we do not ask for a written parent statement, we look forward to your comments during your visit.
Candidates may expect to receive decisions through the mail no later than mid-March.

Entrance Procedures: First Grade
Application packages and tour scheduling for the next school year will be available starting mid-September.
Pleae follow these steps in applying to First Grade at The Potomac School:

- The Admission Office will schedule a group visit for Second and Third Grade applicants on a Saturday morning in January or February. You will be notified of the date and time of your child’s visit after your application is received and processed.
All applicants are required to have the test results, current teacher recommendation, and current official school transcript in the Admission Office by February 1. While we do not ask for a written parent statement, we look forward to your comments during your visit.

- The Admission Office will schedule a group test for Fourth through Sixth Grade applicants on a Saturday morning in January or February.
- Students will also come to campus for a weekday morning group visit in January or February. You will be notified of the date and times after your application is received and processed.
All applicants are required to have the test results, current teacher recommendation, and current official school transcript in the Admission Office by February 1. While we do not ask for a written parent statement, we look forward to your comments during your visit.

Entrance Procedures: Seventh and Eighth Grades
Application packages and tour schedules for the next school year will be available starting mid-September.
Please follow these steps in applying to the Seventh and Eighth Grades at The Potomac School:
- Call the Admission Office to schedule a visit and tour of the Intermediate School with your child. A tour by the student and his or her parent(s) is a required part of the admission procedure for new Intermediate School applicants. (Families and applicants from overseas or outside the area are not required to come to the campus. Click here for more information. )
Tours are offered between mid-September and mid-February. We recommend that you call by December 15 to schedule a tour. Applications do not need to be submitted before these tours are scheduled.
- Register for the SSAT (Secondary School Admission Test) that is administered in November, December, or January. Our SSAT code # is 5872. The Potomac School will accept the ISEE (www.erbtest.org) in lieu of the SSAT. Our ISEE code # is 472555.
- Submit the completed admission application and $60 fee (payable to The Potomac School) by January 15. Late applications are processed if space allows.
- Submit the completed Student Questionnaire. This is to be filled out by the applicant and may be submitted separately from the application.
- Submit the Transcript Request and Math, English, and Foreign Language Teacher Recommendations to your child’s current school. The Optional Recommendation may be sent to an additional individual familiar with the applicant, such as an athletic coach, religious or scout leader, or art or music teacher.
- The Admission Office will schedule an hour-long visit consisting of an interview with a faculty member and a writing exercise on a Saturday morning in January or February. You will be notified of the date and time of your child’s visit after your application is received and processed.
- A morning classroom visit during January or February is optional for those students who have already applied. Call the Admission Office in December to schedule a visit.
All Seventh and Eighth Grade applicants are required to have the student questionnaire, test results, current teacher recommendations, and current official school transcript in the Admission Office by February 1. While we do not ask for a written parent statement, we look forward to your comments during your visit or phone conversation.
Candidates may expect to receive decisions through the mail no later than mid-March.

Entrance Procedures: Ninth through Eleventh Grades
Application packages and tour schedules for the next school year will be available starting mid-September.
Follow these steps in applying to the Ninth through Eleventh Grades at The Potomac School:
- Call the Admission Office to schedule a tour of the Upper School. This tour is a required part of the admission procedure for new Upper School applicants and parents. (Families and applicants from overseas or outside the area are not required to come to the campus. Click here for more information.) These small group tours are offered on selected days between mid-October and mid-February. We recommend that you call by December 15 to schedule a tour. Applications do not need to be submitted before these tours are scheduled.
- Call the Admission Office to schedule an interview and class visit. An interview for each student is required. An opportunity to visit classes is offered to each student who submits the application sheet before winter break. We recommend that you call by December 15 to schedule the interview and class visit.
- Register for the SSAT (Secondary School Admission Test) that is administered in November, December, or January. Our SSAT code # is 5872. The Potomac School will accept the ISEE (www.erbtest.org) in lieu of the SSAT. Our ISEE code # is 472555. The PSAT can be accepted in lieu of the SSAT for Eleventh Grade.
